Ecuador's plantations are also unique because the rarest variety of cocoa beans - "Nacional" - grows here. Its yield is only 1% of the world's harvest.
Because of this and the complex taste, which acquires incomparable combinations depending on the region of cultivation, local farmers call their cocoa beans "black gold".
